As I reflect on my extraordinary journey to a pain-free home birth, I can’t help but be amazed at the remarkable transformation my body and mind underwent. In fact, It began the moment I found out I was pregnant and was faced with the reality of the changes I knew I had coming up ahead.
The idea of carrying a tiny, growing human inside me for nine months was mind blowing. But when I contemplated the actual thought of bringing this little miracle into the world, the enormity of the challenge hit me like a tidal wave. It was a wake-up call like no other.
So, I embarked on a quest for knowledge. I was determined to discover if pain-free births were possible and what other moms’ experiences were. Home births had always held a special place in my heart, so tapping into the world of natural, pain-free births became my mission. What became evident from my research was that achieving a smooth, blissful, complication-free, and pain-free home birth required preparation starting right NOW.
I quickly realized that labor is a formidable job, and it’s a role you have to train for—both mentally and physically—throughout your pregnancy. It’s perplexing to me that labor and delivery often take the back burner in conversations about pregnancy when, in fact, it’s the most vital and crucial part of the entire process.
The labor and delivery process is a test of a woman’s body that we, as a society, often overlook. I was determined to change that narrative for myself and add value and meaning to this experience. I wanted to tap into my mind’s potential, translating pain into energy. Most importantly, I wanted my baby to enter this world feeling safe, calm, and surrounded by an overwhelming sense of happiness.
I started by asking myself, “What can I do today?” The journey began with staying active throughout my entire pregnancy, even if it meant just a small daily activity, a stretch, or a dance. Baby positioning movements became a part of my daily routine, and stretching my hips and squatting became a priority. Perineal massages and kegel exercises also joined the regimen.
However, it wasn’t just physical training. Mental preparation was equally crucial. I learned that what you listen to during pregnancy matters, and so I delved into the world of hypnobirthing. I discovered the significance of using the right, productive terms when discussing birth. I trained my mind to perceive birth as an exciting, natural, and easy experience. Most importantly, I trained my mind to trust my body.
The moment of truth came when I labored around my bedroom in Cape Coast, Ghana, and gave birth to my little girl in a squatted position in front of my bed. The days leading up to the birth were a whirlwind of activity, getting my baby positioned down just right in my pelvis, all in preparation for the delivery. Once my water broke and active labor began, I started to labor around my room, moving from side laying on the bed, to bending over a stool, sitting on a stool in the bathroom while my mom ran cool water on my back, to simply walking back and fourth from one place to another. My body did not want to be still, so I moved around the entire time, this helped a lot with allowing gravity to bring my baby down as i pushed standing up, yes standing up! I sang my chants and before I knew it (about 2hours in) my babies head was crowning! I squatted in front of my bed,and waited for my next surge, once my uterus began to contract i let out a big push, out came her head. The next surge came very quickly and with one big push the rest of her body slid right out! Mind you, my perineum was lubricated before pushing with raw coconut oil. A beautiful baby girl born right in my home, out of my body, she looked up at me just as much in disbelief as i was!
The experience was unlike anything I had ever imagined. It was satisfying, electric, and miraculous. It solidified my belief that my body was designed for this, and it knew exactly what to do. With fear, doubt, and worry removed from the equation, the miraculous became a reality. No medications, no doctors, no machines—just TRUST in my bodies capabilities. I knew I had the proper knowledge to achieve successful positive birthing I knew I had trained enough mentally that when my water broke, I did not have a sense of panic, i had a sense of bliss, excitement and focus. I want to teach other women how to shift their mindset just how I did!!
In it this book I’ll lay out the exact steps I took to achieve a pain-free, stress-free home birth, from pregnancy through delivery. A roadmap to a magical birthing experience that I believe every woman deserves.
